Four Facts About Hybrid Dogs Unethical Breeders Don't Want You to Know

What Is a Hybrid Dog Really? What are hybrid dogs exactly? Why are they so costly, and is hybrid vigor in dogs true, or is it a myth? I was wondering about this when I met a Goldendoodle who suffered from major health issues and had several temperament issues on top of all that. Sadly, the owner confessed that she had been told about how this breed was superior in many ways to its purebred counterparts because of hybrid vigor. Bergamasco Sheepdog: A Comprehensive Guide to This Rustic Breed Entlebucher Mountain Dog: The Smallest Swiss Mountain Breed In this case, it turned out hybrid vigor wasn't very much in force. F1 VS F2 Vs f1b Golden doodles

The topic of generations is commonly surrounded by confusion and many owners are not even sure which generation they actually own or how to “crack the code” of the various letters and numbers even if they are aware of the denotation. For purposes of this article, we will use the Goldendoodle as our case study . So we will use the Golden Retriever and Poodle as our purebred parent examples. However, the same formula would apply to any doodle breed.  One would simply substitute the purebred parent associated with the doodle you are interested in: “Bernese Mountain Dog” for the Bernedoodle, “Old English Sheepdog” for the Sheepadoodle, etc.  Interested in adding a new puppy to your family?     Learn about our puppy matchmaking process     See our upcoming litters of doodle puppies     Start your puppy application     Speak to a member of our team to learn more F1 = Golden Retriever X Poodle The “F” stands for “filial” and is simply a way to ...

F What?! A Guide to Doodle Generations

If you’re interested in buying a doodle your head may be swimming by all the generation lingo such as F1, F2, F1b, etc. But don’t fret! We’re here to tell you what the F it’s all about. Let’s start with what a doodle is. Whether you’re searching for a labradoodle , a bernedoodle, or any other type it’s important to understand that doodles are a “crossbreed.”     Crossbreeding is the result of two different purebreds being bred. In the case of doods, that’s a Poodle + another breed. Doodles can also be “backcrossed,” but we’ll get to that in a second. Let’s start with the parents of any doodle. For the following examples we will make our doodle breed a Goldendoodle, so a Golden Retriever + Standard Poodle. Starting with the two purebred parents we have the “P Generation” which simply means 100% purebred. Just think of “P” generation as “Purebred” or “Pedigree” Gen. When breeding our 2 P generation parents, we get an F1 generation which simply means 50/50 of each P Gen, so in th...

Dog Expert Unveils Myth of Hybrid Vigor in Goldendoodle Breeding

The canine Goldendoodle breed (mixture of a Golden Retriever and Poodle) has been heralded as both a unique super-breed and a monstrosity of the canine world.  It seems neither of these is true, but some breeders and owners still propagate these beliefs and often misconstrue genetic principles of breeding.  Because Goldendoodles are such a popular hybrid, sometimes these incorrect assertions are used to support objectives such as puppy sales of either Goldendoodles or purebreds only. What is true is that puppies are a combination of the genetic make-up of their parents.  Some people claim that the first generation of a Goldendoodle, a puppy from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle parent (called an F1 hybrid), has hybrid vigor.  However, it is typically incorrectly used to argue that these F1 hybrid Goldendoodles are less susceptible to the diseases of their parents.  Several studies including those by Charlesworth evaluated the complicated genetic function of inbr...
